As of August 6, 2026: across the 17 electric models with battery-replacement data, an out-of-warranty EV battery replacement runs roughly $8,000–$26,000. But most EVs never need one inside the manufacturer's 8–10 years / 100,000–175,000 miles battery warranty, so it is not in our 5-year cost-of-ownership totals — it's the cost buyers worry about most, so here it is transparently, per model, with sources.

When an EV battery replacement actually matters
- Almost never inside the warranty. Every model above carries a manufacturer battery warranty of 8–10 years / 100,000–175,000 miles — typically guaranteeing a minimum capacity retention (commonly ~70%). A full pack failure in that window is replaced under warranty, so it costs the owner nothing and is not in our 5-year totals.
- Degradation, not death, is the usual story. Typical projected lifespan across these packs is ~12–16 years; most packs lose a few percent of range over years rather than failing outright, so a mid-life full replacement is the exception, not the plan.
- Out-of-warranty is where the figures above apply. If a pack does need replacing after the warranty, the per-model estimate above is what to budget — dominated by the pack itself plus several hours of labor, and it varies with chemistry (LFP vs NMC) and pack size.
