Where EVs actually win the 5-year total

As of August 2026: an electric car wins the 5-year total in 7 of 35 countries we track — in each, the cheapest EV to own beats the cheapest petrol, hybrid or plug-in hybrid at that market's dated local rates and typical mileage. In the other 28 the combustion car is still the cheaper choice, and we say so plainly.

countries we track where an electric car wins the 5-year total — the cheapest EV to own beats the cheapest petrol, hybrid or plug-in hybrid at that market's dated local rates. As of August 2026.

Where the EV wins: Denmark, Ireland, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Thailand, Vietnam. In the other 28, the combustion car keeps the crown — that side of the story is the EV vs Gas 5-Year Cost Index 2026.

Every market's headline matchup

Each market's honest headline matchup — its cheapest electric car to own vs its cheapest petrol, hybrid or plug-in hybrid, both ranked by the market's own cost engine at dated local rates. EV-win markets first, then alphabetical. Gaps are in local currency and are not comparable across currencies.

Method (one line): for each market we rank its own tracked fleet by true 5-year cost of ownership — the same cost engine behind that market's calculator, at its dated local electricity and fuel rates and typical annual distance — and put its cheapest electric car up against its cheapest petrol/hybrid; the lower total wins. Full assumptions and sources: methodology.

The honest counterweight: winning here is the exception, not the rule — our EV vs Gas 5-Year Cost Index 2026 shows the cheapest car to own overall is a petrol, hybrid or plug-in hybrid in 28 of 35 of these same markets. United States drivers: state-level rates can flip individual matchups — see where EVs win in the U.S..
